First, she makes it clear that Tom Fitzwilliam took the newspaper reports at face value. Now as readers we may have already come up with the conclusion that Viva was murdered by Nikki, but in placing the revelation here Jewell does a number of things. Indeed, his reaction suggests that he concludes that this was no suicide but that his late wife must have murdered Viva. So when Freddie presents him with the bunch of hair he finds in his mother’s boxes, Fitzwilliam realises that this places Nikki at least shortly before Viva’s death. Tom Fitzwilliam will have been aware of that newspaper report. ![]() …Miss Hart left no note, and had cut off her hair with a pair of scissors shortly before taking her own life ![]() Right up to the end of the book it is maintained that Genevieve Hart kills herself, as a result of the appalling bullying she endured from Nikki Lee and her sidekicks. I know they are super important to the story but I can’t deny that I was occasionally disappointed when I saw that a 25-minute Dalinar flashback was in the middle of the more immediate action. I can’t help thinking that some of Dalinar’s sections bored me though. Certain segments of the flashbacks were pretty intriguing, especially his time suffering from alcoholism, details about his ShShShShSh wife and about his meeting with the Nightwatcher. She felt certain she would be able to withdraw herself intact when the time came. And decided it was okay to let her heart flit and flutter around, and for her breath to get caught in her chest like the ghost’s flowing headdress on a shrub. ![]() |
